Previous Week's Speaker: Solid Waste Plant-Site Tour & Lunch!

Reiner Domalski introduced Helena Jones from the Centre County Waste Facility Interpretative Center who gave a nice presentation on the following:

The building that we were meeting in was "recycled". They took pieces away and used what they could of the current building--which was the old administrative offices and is now the interpretative center. After recycling what they could, only 750 lbs. was sent to the landfills--Amazing!

Helena explained the 3 stages of recycling: The 3 Arrows stand for:

  1. Collection
  2. Manufacturing of products from recycled material.
  3. Buy Recycled Products

The Chairs we sat on today were made of #1 and #2 Plastic Bottles (Water and Soda Bottles).

  • The tables were made from recycled steel. All steel is made of 53% recycled materials.
  • The building has energy efficient lighting and the blinds are made of recycled aluminum.
  • The ceiling is made out of recycled newspaper--The CDT could have been above us!
  • Trash and Recyclables are collected at the site. They accept:
  • Tires - Small Fee
  • White Goods - Stoves, Refrigerators and small appliances for FREE - this is to help reduce people dumping them illegally.
  • Rechargeable Batteries

The Centre Region trash is shipped to a landfill in Somerset County as there is not a landfill here because of the limestone...not safe.

Recycling has been mandated and the Borough police is policing the recycling process in the borough. Helena wasn't sure what other municipalities were doing in the area as far as policing. She reported that in Philadelphia, residents get "ticketed" if they do not recycle. They use clear plastic bags that must be used to dispose of trash and areas of Philadelphia are policed. Residents are given warnings and then ticketed if it happens a 2nd time.

Curbside collectors sort through what can and what can't be accepted. In the rural areas where there are "red bins" that are collection bins, all materials are brought back and sorted through to determine what is and what isn't recyclable in our area. If there is something that does not have enough volume to find a vendor, it is kept in bins until there is enough of it to ship out.

E-Cycling (computers, printers) is being looked into in 2004.
