Previous Week's Speaker: Club Assembly & Classification Talks

Pamela (PJ) Browning, President & Publisher of the Centre Daily Times
PJ grew up in Springfield, Mo. It was already during high school that she became interested in newspapers. She later received a degree in marketing and management from Southwest Missouri State University. During her college years and after graduation, PJ's career led her from classified advertising sales to the top management positions in the newspaper industry. Although publishing company Gannet Co. Inc., owned most of the newspapers that PJ worked for she was recently hired as a new publisher of our hometown newspaper, the Centre Daily Times. Knight Ridder, which owns CDT is more focused on small communities despite the fact that they also own several of the large newspapers around the country, according to PJ. She enjoys working at the CDT and getting involved in our community.
As a publisher, PJ is responsible for all aspects of publishing. She oversees all of the departments and has a final say on any editorial position that the paper takes. For example, PJ commented on a timely topic, when it comes to endorsing political candidates prior to elections, there is an internal editorial board, which decides on which candidates the paper endorses. However, if there were a tie, it would be PJ's responsibility to break it.
PJ is married to Kerry, her high school sweetheart. They have three wonderful children, ages 16, 15, and 13, who have adjusted well despite several moves to different locations in the country before ending here in Happy Valley.

Evan Smith, director of administration, McQuaide Blasko Attorneys.
Evan Smith humorously described his job as doing everything that is "not legal." His responsibilities include office administration, computers, purchasing decisions, expanding, and more. McQuide Blasko is the area's largest law firm with 80 employees, including 30 attorneys. Smith has worked for the firm for the past eight years.

Prior to his present position, Smith spent four years (1993 to 1997) as the Centre County Administrator. His position placed him in the public eye and the pressures of the job were numerous. Smith said that he has learned several things during his tenure, including that "Paranoia is simply a heighten state of awareness."

Smith considers himself a "townie," his family moved to State College when he was just six years old. Smith attended school here and graduated from Penn State. When he was younger, he even owned a small antique clocks business here that some might remember. After graduation he joined the Army where he spent nine years as an Emergency Planner. While in upstate New York, he met his wife. They have two children. His son is a student at Penn State and has just recently been accepted in the Air Force and his daughter is a high school student.

Although his job responsibilities and raising children don't leave much time for hobbies, Smith has recently resurrected a hobby, which he started a long time ago. He became a part owner of a plane and enjoys spending his free time flying.

Carl Hill presented a third Paul Harris Fellowship to Meg Moose. Carl reminded us about the Foundation Dinner too. It will be held on November 13.

Secretaries report was a bit ambiguous. We do know that attendance stinks and we can do better. It is so easy to do make-ups with the E-club and another Rotary club in town.

Treasurers report was that we are solvent.

Two applications for membership are in the ten day period. If you have a conflict with one of these see Terry Edwards, the membership chairman or Roger Fetter.

This week’s note taker: Paul Rutter & Jana King
