  • We need volunteers to work the gates for the Illinois-PSU game on November 2. Ron Taverno will be posting an announcement via the List Serv to tell about Football gate working. The next game is against Illinois on November 2. There are 2 more opportunities to serve after the Illinois game that will need workers. Call Ron Taverno to sign up. It counts as a make-up and the club earns cash!
  • Hugh Mose congratulated those members who have been successful in selling their raffle tickets and announced that all club members have received their allotted 19 to sell.
  • Dr. D is the chair of the Group Study Exchange. A press release should appear soon in the CDT. The study teams consist of four (4) members plus a group leader. There has been a change made on this program in that instead of sending and receiving a team every year we will alternate each year between sending a team. We will host a team from South Korea 19 April 2003 to 18 May 2003. In 2004, we will send a team to South Korea.
  • Welcome to newest member Tom Murray!
  • The club has a list serv. All active members are on it. The email address for it is SCDTROTARY-L@LISTS.PSU.EDU. It only works if you are a subscriber so if you aren't on it and want to know even more about the club email Paul Rutter to see about your admission. It is a private listserv not open to the public. If you are already on it and want help with it please call or email me.

fund raising committee passed out tickets for use to sell for the cruise raffle. The cruise doesn't have a date it has be taken within. The value of the cruise is $3500. Winners can arrange a round that. It should be good enough though, for airfare from Harrisburg to a carribbean cruise port, and a cruise of 7 days. The second prize is a 27" color TV; 3rd prize is a cash award of $250.
  • On November 12, there will be a Paul Harris Presentation at the evening club by PDG Bus Fowler and Don Tressler. All Paul Harris Fellows are asked to attend.
  • Nominations for District Governor Nominee are being accepted. The year of service as Governor would be 2005-2006. Contact Carol if interested.
Previous Week's Speaker: Mike Majewski-US Navy submarines

Our speaker this week was Lt. Mike Majewski, USN.

Mike is on shore duty as an instructor at the NROTC unit azt PSU but he also is a qualified submariner. Mike spoke to us giving an overview of the submarine service of today. He identified the three different types of boats in use today: boomers, fast attacks, and specially fitted boats like the Sea Wolf class.

In his presentation Mike showed slides that covered how a crew member lives on the boat, and what type of lovely accommodations there are. He went over the food storage situation, the usage of weaponry, creation of fresh air or not, and what the chicken switches on a submarine do to allow an emergency surface like the image below.

Mike covered what the missions of todays submarines are. fast attack boats are used to seek and destroy the enemy. He noted that the fast attacks have the ability to stay out at sea as long as the food lasts. Mike told us that boomers or fleet balistic missile sunbmarines are the ones seen as a deterrent to war. The newer class of boat the Sea Wolf is extremely fast, quiet and capable of going deep. These boats also are very very cvery expensive. Only three are being built.

Mike showed a picture of my old submarine the USS awkbill at the northpole when his roommate was on the boat.

To say the least, this was by far the best speaker a weekly Rotary meeting as had in the 14 years I have been in Rotary.(~Paul)
