Previous Week's Speaker: Don Sherman- United Nations Association- Foxdale

Don Sherman spoke about the United Nations. Don is a board member of CATA and in fact Hugh’s boss. Don and his wife formed the local Chapter of the United Nations Association.

Don’s opening reminded us that the United Nations is not a world government. The UN’s member nations, voting in the General Assembly and other bodies, determine policies and programs to achieve the purposes stated in the UN Charter. The United Nations is an association of governments formed in 1945 at the conclusion of World War II. It currently has 191 member nations. The goals of the UN are to maintain international peace and security, to achieve international cooperation in solving economic, social, cultural and humanitarian problems and in promoting respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, and to be a center for harmonizing the actions of nations in attaining these common ends.

The United Nations has six main bodies.

  • General Assembly
  • Security Council
  • Economic and Social Council
  • Trusteeship Council
  • International Court of Justice
  • Secretariat

What we call the United Nations System is made up of these six bodies and their subsidiary bodies, including, for example, the United Nations International Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) .

Don provided us with a very informative speech.
