LAST WEEK IN REVIEW

Visiting Rotarians: Jerry Friedman, Geoff Wilson, Mary Dunkel of the evening club
Make-ups turned in:
Guests:
Jeff Wike, spouse of our District Governor, and new member Ron Quinn's wife, Denise. Also Evan Smith, a guest of the club and Pam Browning, a guest of Hugh Mose.
50/50: Geoff Wilson had the lucky ticket but alas it did him no good becasue he pulled a nice big red queen of hearts and not the ace of spades. Now there are 15 cards left and about $1700 in the pot to split.
Auction: In an exciting auction that had a "rebid" session, Jerry Friedman did the thing any "good" husband would do, he out bid others includign PDG Carol for the auction item for his wife who had quit bidding at a lower level. Teresa Davis provided the auction item from the new shop that opened next to Espers, Stone Soup.

  • The District Newsletter is online at the district Web site.
  • Happy Happy Bucks are funds paid to the club to speak up and tell all why you are happy!Bucks from: •Ron Quinn offered $$moo-la in recognition of his second granddaughter Rose Kauffman let us know she is happy because she is going fishing in Alaska for three weeks.• Paul Bell offered happy bucks for celebrating another birthday!
  • The club stationary for the letter to participants is online in MS Word format
  • Attendance is woefully small this summer. Please make make-ups. use the E-club if you have too.
  • Membership training seminar is in Altoona on August 28th.
  • The coupon books are due out and back by August 12. Get your letters out and follow up. Contact Pat Coble for more information.
  • Remember when bringing a guest to introduce them as such and not as a prospective member even if they are one. This could save embarrassment on the part of everyone in case someone is not approved.
  • Bank over at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. Pat Coble, the Food Bank executive director said that 60% of low income children need books for kids.
  • Jim Eberly reported about Rotary's Central Parklet Project sponsored by the two SC clubs. The new "Children's Play Space" will be lot of fun for kids. The total costs of the project are $50,000. 50% needs to be raised by the two SC clubs as part of Rotary's 100th anniversary in 2005. Bricks are on sale ($100 for first kid name, $50 for each subsequent). The bricks will be used for the walkway. A pamphlet was distributed.
  • International Conference 2005 is in Chicago, June 18-22, 2005. It is probably a good idea to make reservations for attending this now.
  • Jim Eberly mentioned the Centennial project. We are selling bricks for $100 to raise money for the park. The subsequent bricks are $50. Funds donated are through the clubs 501(c)3 so that means tax deductible.At summer concerts in the parklet we will be doing water sales to raise money too. The remaining date is August 10. Mark your calendar!
  • The club has a list serv. All active members are on it. The email address for it is SCDTROTARY-@LISTS.PSU.EDU. Email Paul Rutter to see about your admission. It is a private listserv not open to the public. If you are already on it and want help with it please call or email me.
  • mystery answer: With all his world travels it has to be none other than Dick Held. And it is!
Previous Week's Speaker: District Governor Kelly Wike

DG Kelly Wike spoke to us this week.

Rotary has helped many folks over the years. A special thanks to this Rotary club for all the local help it has expended to the community
Special Focuses of Rotary:

  1. Literacy. Literacy is all around us. We tend to think that it is only in third world countries, but it is in our back yard. We need to work to educate those closest to us.
  2. Health Concerns: Rotary focuses on Aids, Diabetes, as well as Polio, through Polio Plus
  3. Water Mgt: every 8 seconds a child dies form poor water. 80% of diseases are caused by bad water
  4. Family of Rotary: We have got to get not only our immediate family (spouse and children) involved but we must expend our membership by involving as many people as possible in our causes.
  5. Community: continue to aid the community and serve the community in which we live
Membership: The "Frank" Theory
F = Friends
R = Relationships
A = Acquaintances
N = Neighbors
K = Kids

And there is one more C, S, or M = Place of worship

The Rotary Foundation
  • Saves and changes lives. Give $100 a year to the foundation to help save lives by feeding children.
  • Rotary will feed 1,000,000 kids at a cost of only .10. The nutrition of one cup of rice is enough to sustain a child for a day.
  • Give $100 a year to help the foundation continue to save lives. Become a Paul Harris Fellow and participate in the Youth Programs.

Rotary is celebrating 100 years. Some dates to remember:
November 13th: The foundation dinner
February Joint meeting of local clubs
April 1st & 2nd Orientation for incoming presidents
April 22 Rotary Conference in Chicago
May 13th - 15th District Conference in Altoona

Meeting adjourned at 1:05 PM

This week’s note taker: Chuck Gambone and Paul Rutter
