Happy Happy Bucks are funds paid to the club to speak up and tell all why you are happy!Bucks The note taker just wrote names down, not what they are happy about. So Teresa is happy for Doug who is lounging on the beach in Mexico if I remember right, and Yana is happy about returning from Slovenia and having been with her family and friends for an extended visit. We're glad you are back too!

  • The GSE Team from the Philippines met at Paul's camp Monday night for a cookout and we all had a terrific time. Burgers, Beer, Brats, and Smores! Thanks to Hickeys for the beer!
  • 56% attendance last month... pretty poor IMHO. We can help raise our attendance using virtual club make-ups by going to one of the e-Clubs.
  • The club welcomed Mary Dearmitt back to the club.
  • Still space at Rotary Leadership Training session in Bedford. See Rose.
  • Check your contact information so the listed can be updated.
  • There was a question on what counts as a make up. Rose will check.
  • Roger Fetter reports that the Food Bank project is continuing every Friday. We have delivered more than 1,000 lbs so far
  • Football volunteers had another great time helping and watching the Illinois game down on the field! We have a full slate of volunteers for the next game against Michigan. Yee Haw!!
  • Get out and see the folks you signed up to visit and get them into the D&E book! Get info to Jim Eberly.
  • The Big Apple Express is up and running again. This is the bus from SC to NYC and back over a weekend.
  • Sam Jordan was proposed as a new member by the board of directors. He will be coming from the Bellefonte club. Members have 10 days to comment on his proposal to join our club.
  • Rainer and Rose passed around via email and paper a membership list to have all of us correct for release soon.
  • Rotaract on Penn State's campus is soliciting help to increase membership
  • The district needs applicants for the Rotary GSE trip to the Philippines. At the same time the club and State College area Rotary clubs are planning for the exchange. The Philippine team will be here in October.
  • Carl said dues statements are coming out, but why wait? It's $115 per quarter and that includes your lunch each Thursday for 13 weeks!
  • The Nittany Lions defeated Ohio State in Ohio Stadium for OSU's 3rd loss at home in 7 years. The BCS dares to rank Penn State 3rd. There will be substantial motivation to destroy the opposition the rest of the way. Thank you BCS! Penn State for National Champions becasue we have not only offense but defense too! Thanks to everyone who has helped work the gates before the PSU home football games. There are no more openings for helping this year. Thanks to Roger Dunlop, Kat Snowe (from our club) and husband Dave from the breakfast club, Bob Williams, Fabian Meinke (our RYEX student), Hugh Mose and wife Janyce, Nicole Webster from the breakfast club, Tineke Cuning and husband Jack from Breakfast club, my wife Anne, Meg Moose for having one of her colleagues and many other helpers for helping us fill the slate for all games. For more information on what we do and to be on a waiting list for Indiana or Michigan State ask Paul 863-3387 office. Your get free field seats and parking passes for helping. Also if you are interested in helping next year for the 2009 season let me know to reserve your spot.

  • Previous Week's Speaker: Tom Murray, CEO Mount Nittany Medical Center

the Medical Center is a 203-bed acute-care facility offering medical, surgical, diagnostic and community services that are focused on helping patients reach their health potential. One of the region's top places to work, the Medical Center employs about 1,300 skilled healthcare professionals and support staff, and credentials more than 240 non-employed physicians in 42 specialties and subspecialties. Volunteers contribute more than 56,000 hours of service each year.

On July 8, 1902 the Bellefonte Hospital was incorporated in a frame house with six patient beds. Continual growth led to a number of building and expansion programs and a name change to Centre County Hospital in 1924 and then to Centre Community Hospital in 1971. To meet increasing demand for services, a new hospital building, known as the Mountainview Unit, was opened July 26, 1972 in State College. The Bellefonte Hospital (called the Willowbank Unit) and the Mountainview Unit both operated until 1978 when Willowbank was closed. Major construction projects were completed in 1980 (South Wing), in 1984 (Health Services Wing), 1989 (Branigan Wing - ED), and 1993 (expansion and renovation). The Centre Medical Sciences building opened in 1994 and the Centre Community Surgical Center began operation there. During 1996-97 major additions included a new Birthing Center, new Transitional Care Unit, Laboratory expansion and Operating Suite renovation. An affiliation between Centre Community Hospital, Penn State's Hershey Medical Center and Lehigh Valley Hospital created the Penn State Cancer Institute in September 2000. New President and CEO, Thomas J. Murray took the helm September 4, 2001. On November 6, 2003, Centre Community Hospital's name was changed to Mount Nittany Medical Center to more accurately represent the organization's progress and vision of becoming a medical center of choice.

Today, Mount Nittany Medical Center has emerged as a modern acute care facility, focused on its singular mission to provide superior care to the communities it serves.

    Historical Highlights

Mount Nittany Medical Center's history spans more than a century of serving the healthcare needs of the central Pennsylvania region:

    • 1902 - Founded as a six-bed community hospital in nearby Bellefonte.
    • 1924 - Continual growth led to a number of buildings, expansion and a name change to Centre County Hospital.
    • 1971 - The hospital was renamed Centre Community Hospital.
    • 1972 - To meet increasing demand for services, a new facility, referred to as the Mountainview Unit, was opened in State College. The Bellefonte facility was renamed the Willowbank Unit.
    • 1978 - To better serve its patients, the Bellefonte location closed and services consolidated at the Mountainview Unit.
    • 2000 - Penn State Cancer Institute created
    • 2003 - Signifying its growth as a regional medical center, Centre Community Hospital became Mount Nittany Medical Center.
    • 2007 - Interventional cardiology saves lives in the region bringing life-saving cardiac care close to home.
    • 2008 - Mount Nittany Center for Wound Care is opened.

“If we only listen to those whom we already see eye to eye, we will never create better understanding, a concept that is at the core of Rotary.”
-Martin G Molony, District 1160 Governor, Dublin Central, Ireland
    in The Rotarian, January 2006

"Of the things we think, say or do:

    Is it the TRUTH?

Is it FAIR to all concerned?

Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"
