Previous Week's Speaker: Betsy Allen, Schlow Library Project

Teresa Davis introduced our speaker Betsy Allen and her helper Jerry Wettstone, a local REALTOR.

Betsy gave us some statitstics about the library after a brief senior moment of remembering or not if she has spoken to us in the previous fall of 2002.

All 6 municipalities in Centre County provide funding for the public library, something that doesn't always happen in most communities.
The library loaned out 524,000 items a 12% increase over 2 years previous. Betsy said that this makes sense because when the economy is in the tanks, public library usage whether it is reading magazines, or checking out books will increase. Betsy said that the public computer usage has increased too.
There are 34,000 library card holders and 126,000 items are in the library.
The library is open daily. In the summer there isa childrens sumer readign program. 1400 children are involved in this which extends to 5 elemmentary schools being helped by the library.

Betsy told us that the current library building is "far too old." The library is 38% of the size of libraries for other communities the size of Centre County. But not too worry there is a new library in the works and there is a capital campaign underway to help support the building. The new building will be in the same place as the current Schlow Library and extend back to the Goodwill building. In the capital campaign the public portion that is still being raised is 3 million dollars. The library has collected or has commitments for 2.5 million of this. The government is checking in with 2.5 million.

While the library is being built the library will be housed temporariliy in the old State College borough building rent free.

Betsy took questions and Carl Hill asked abotu the name change question. Betsy didn't put this to rest but she did tell us that the campaign for the new library was just called to the new Centre County library making people think that the names was being dropped which isn't the case. The library board has made no decisions on this at all. I'm guessing sense future growth plans for the library after this new building call for branch offices through out the county, that the naming the library campaign for the new Centre County public library will remind all residents that the library is for the county not State College alone.-editor

If you can help put the Schlow library over the top, please contact either Betsy Allen or Jerry Whetstone.
