It was Dana Catalano! You might have remembered this from his
classication talk a couple of weeks ago!
| Previous
Week's Speaker: Brad Lunsford (District Justice) |
(graduate of Penn State and Dusquesne University; Assistant Public
Defender, Assistant District Attorney, private attorney, District
Justice since 1995; active in several community organizations such
as Elks and Leadership Centre County).
In the beginning, he discussed the criminal justice system in Centre
County. He especially mentioned the mental health and its affects
on actions and crimes in the United States.
The total number of district cases is 46,148 filed in the five district
courts (32,218 traffic; 7,927 bad checks and retail theft). The last
ones set the tone for the community. These crimes are often committed
by juveniles.
There are also 2,207 civil cases (breach of contracts, landlord/tenant
cases). 2,554 criminal cases go to the DJ to establish whether the
case should go to the Appeals Court. Yearly costs of the criminal
system is $1.009 MM.
The #1 crime is bad checks followed by retail thefts. Thefts (i.e,
Unimart, Sheetz) are mostly connected to heroin addicts. Thefts are
often auctioned on EBAY.
Yesterday, four cases of child molestation were brought up in the
district courtroom. Today, children are coming forward, more than
in the past. The club thanks Brad Lunsford for his presentation.
This weeks note taker: Ron Taverno and
Ranier Domalski
