Our speaker today was Al Matyasovsky. Al works for PSU responsible among other things for special event recycling. PSU tries to keep our land fills from being to large and if funds can be recovered that is a great benefit. Al is a diehard Penn Stater with two kids having graduated and one a sophomore almost. He's been married 34 years to the same woman. Pennsylvania State University (PSU), nationally acclaimed for its academics and sports, also is known for its recycling program. Al Matyasovsky, a supervisor of central support services in the Office of Physical Plant, leads the recycling efforts on campus and facilitated the university’s Trash to Treasure collection event with the United Way of Centre County. Trash to Treasure encouraged PSU students to donate usable clothes, furniture, electronics and other items to the local United Way. Each dorm served as a collection point, and volunteers sorted clothes and organized all donations. Al and his team collected more than 70 tons of materials ranging from cameras and coats to appliances and couches. In 2004 there were 80 tons and raised $54,673. In 2003 there were 70 tons and raised 38,000, and in 2002 there was 72 tons and $15,000 of money raised. Al let us knew that the generosity truely is of the students becasue they don't just abandon things- they have to actively place material to be donated in certain areas of dorms. Al says this is a great way for students to learn about philanthropy. “Trash to Treasure supports the environmental stewardship mission of keeping materials from the landfill and reducing the total refuse generated by Penn State through creative recycling and reuse initiatives,” Al said. “This also is a fine example of ‘town and gown’ partnership to support our neighbors in need through the United Way and its agencies.” Al also coordinates the campus Newspaper Readership Program, which recycles used newspapers to fund a scholarship for PSU students. To date, this program has saved 11,845 trees and 2,085 cubic yards of landfill space. More about Al & Trash to Treasure: Please see announcements section for other news.
