Happy Bucks
came from: There were
zero, count 'em no happy people today. It was raining
like all hell had let loose though so the ducks were happy.
The Festival of Trees will be December 7-10.
In honor of the Rotary Foundation month, which is November, and to promote
Paul Harris Fellowship participation, our club's Foundation Committee
members are gathering a number of attractive items, which are added to
a huge gift basket. The committee is sponsoring a raffle of this gift
basket and the proceeds of the raffle will be donated to the Rotary International
Foundation in our name. The raffle tickets are $5 each, and the basket,
consisting of various books, wine, beer, cookies, chocolates, movies and
more will be on display during our meetings until November 30 when the
lucky winner will be chosen. Judy Myrick is selling raffle tickets for
this item.
Bob Williams updated us on the Foundation Dinner.
Bob attended and spoke about the opportunity to meet with other Rotarians
that are similarly excited about the many great things the Foundation
provides. He put the event in a good light.
A wine tasting party was held on November
3 at Carol Walsh's home. Thanks to all who participated. This
was a fun evening and raised over $250 for the club.
Thank
you to those who helped place labels on the dictionaries last week.
Carl Hill will be setting up this years youth exchange program. If
anyone is interested contact Carl.
The District Newsletter is avaialble at the District Web
site,
Dick Jones and Don Bedell talked about the coupon book preparations.

Teresa shared information about our meals at
Damon's. Each week we have an option of a house salad or the entre prepared
for us that day. At no time is anyone to request to have chicken or
steak added to the salad. All that we are contracted for is the garden
salad. Additionally when you request special salads; the orders for everyone
else get backlogged because the server is also the one that has to prepare
the salad. There is additional cost that is borne by the club when you
place requests for extras too.
The committee assignments were placed
on the tables; it was also proposed to have a "Minute Man" list
for potential speakers available on a short notice if a scheduled speaker
is prevented from coming.
Teresa shared news from the Penn State Rotaract club for the new academic
year. Over 50 persons showed up to an informational session. These were
students that had been involved with Rotary as Interacters in high school.
Todd passed out coins from the PA National Guard to all Rotarians that
helped with the event.

Week's Speaker: Gary
Glen, Master Chef from the Mt. Nittany Medical Center |
With a clever mention of Soylent
Green in his intro, Bob Williams introduced his brother-in-law Gary
Glen.
Gary is the head cook at the hospital, but it is so much more than that.
In fact, after hearing Gary speak (he is not only a certified master chef
but he is responsible for the dietary needs of all patients staying there)
one has to wonder how he has time to do any chef work. Helping him work
with patients needs are three certified dietitians on his staff and many
persons helping with food preparation.
Things to note:
- Pennsylvania is one of the very few states that by law says only a
medical doctor can prescribe a menu for patients and it must be written.
In most states a licensed, registered dietitian is allowed to do this.
- The hospital is extremely highrated in three areas by national, state
and hospital bed size for its Press Gainey Survey results. 97%!.
- Gary also mentioend the amount of free care the Medical Center provides
to the community as well as the services that employees provide.
- For Gary sanitation is very important
- Education of nurses on diet is important
- Variety in diet is important for a mixture of nutrients
- He doesn't care to share witha us a favorite restaurant citing there
are many with many good dishes.
- His department of food servies is non revenue generating for the medical
center.
In the future Gary hopes to be able to provide bedside ordering as well
as a cafe for the medical offices building in front of the hospital.
Did you know the hospital does catering?, has a public cafe?

If
we only listen to those whom we already see eye to eye, we will
never create better understanding, a concept that is at the
core of Rotary.

Rotarian, January 2006
