Previous Week's Speaker: David Ostrich - Classification Talk

David was born and raised in Lafayette, Louisiana. Even Jews were unusual in the South, but there is a quite a number. Great great grandfather Greenwald came though Mobile, went then into the Confederate Army. Other great grandparents came to Cincinnati n 1890s, then peddled down to the Mississippi Delta. In Memphis settled a colony group sponsored by Baron Hirsch. Many Jews in Memphis came from Krakow in Poland.

Dad was an O.D., mom worked in the farm business. David played piano and cello, but was also involved in scouts, the debate team and the radio during High School.

Afterwards David went to the college at Northwestern University. That was apparently a cultural shock.

Then, he went to the seminary at HUC including one year in Jerusalem, four years in Cincinnati and summers at Jacobs Camp. Since ordination, he was in Israel, Harrisburg, Savannah and Pensacola. Also, David got involved in Rotary and lots of civic work (i.e., food bank, HRC).

In Pensacola, Florida, David was member of the Mayor's Blue Ribbon task Force on Abortion Related Violence, later changed to a Task Force on Community Values. This task force was founded in the aftermath of the murder of medical personnel of abortion clinics. Questions were raised regarding the factors led to violence and what the community could do to keep peace.

David was involved in TV programs - moral side of news - and taught business ethics at UWF. The basic assumption is that there is morality in business - code of conduct. The system responses to immoral activities through control check - like in the Martha Stuart Case.

David's goal of rabbinate is to work in small communities like small towns. He believes small congregations deserve good leadership. The State College congregation has around 200 families.

In Pensacola, David was in a Rotary Club with 250 members. He was in charge of the Givers Committee and "served" on the Sunshine Committee. This committee was responsible for greeting guests and visiting Rotarians. And to tell jokes. David's specialty was and is Cajun jokes. (Sorry, I am not good in telling jokes.)

Thank you, David, for this vivid presentation about a little bid Jewish history and your very interesting and eventful life. Not to forget your wife of 26 years, two daughters and son.

“If we only listen to those whom we already see eye to eye, we will never create better understanding, a concept that is at the core of Rotary.”
-Martin G Molony, District 1160 Governor, Dublin Central, Ireland
    in The Rotarian, January 2006

"Of the things we think, say or do:

    Is it the TRUTH?

Is it FAIR to all concerned?

Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"
