Previous Week's Speaker: Mohamed Loufi, on a Fulbright from Morocco

Linda Barton a local ESL teacher at the State College High School who has had two children involved in our youth exchange program introduced a guest to the SCHS from Morocco, Mohamed Loufi who spoke to us. Mohamed is an English teacher and is quadrilingual.

He opened his talk by recognizing the weekend being important to Moslems for the birth of Mohamed, to the Jewish faith for Passover, and to Christians for Easter. He spoke about his being here in America is giving him the ability to return to Morocco and help his friends and colleagues overcome false notions of what America is like.

Some points Mohamed made in his talk:

    • He offered that by discovering new, we discover ourselves.
    • Mohamed wanted to make sure we knew that Morocco was the first country to recognize the Untied States.
    • In 1985 there was only one girl in his classroom, now there are many
    • Many films are made in Morocco but they are not seen for religious reasons except on foregn TV channels with subtitles.
    • His country produces much in the way of vegetables (it is a Mediterranean culture) and does not have oil.
    • They do have olives and he is glad thay olives were becoming popular here in the United States because it will be good for Moroccan businessmen.
    • He was impressed by the Gettysburg battlefield.
    • He has learned much from special needs students about strengths and how it is important to make those students feel needed.
    • Rotary is in Tangiers
    • Berber carpets are from Morocco
    • The native people of Morocco are Berbers.

“If we only listen to those whom we already see eye to eye, we will never create better understanding, a concept that is at the core of Rotary.”
-Martin G Molony, District 1160 Governor, Dublin Central, Ireland
    in The Rotarian, January 2006

"Of the things we think, say or do:

    Is it the TRUTH?

Is it FAIR to all concerned?

Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"
