Previous Week's Speaker: Congressman John Peterson

PA 5th district Congressman John Peterson was the speaker at the joint meetign of the two State College Rotary clubs today. Mr. Peterson, a Republican, was first elected in 1996. He is from Titusville, PA and is a veteran and before being in Congress was a small businessman as a grocer. Several members of his staff were present including Mike Glaser from the State College office.

The 5th district for many years was the largest geographically east of the Mississippi which lends itself by definition to mean that we are a very rural region.

Congressman Peterson kept his talk to two topics, the conflict with Iraq and the recent high cost of fuel. Mr. Peterson was proud that many terrorist attacks have been prevented since 9/11. Regarding fuel, Mr. Peterson said he expects gas to costs upward of $2.50 per gallon by the year end. He noted that Saudi Arabia is playing us like a puppet regarding fuel supply. Mr. Peterson said that other economies that are growing like China and India will be in the market for more fuel and will compete with the US for energy. He suggests that we need to shift to alternative fuels, not environmentally safe ones, but natural gas for automobiles. Nothing was mentioned about making vehicles more efficient.

He noted the forwardness of our own CATA busses and how CATA is already using natural gas for 95% of their fuel usage.

Next Mr. Peterson tackled productivity and the need for broadband technology in the rural areas and for businesses to make them more competitive. He mentioned the need for technology training as a source of job knowledge. He said that Pennsylvania lagged far behind in technology knowledge opportunities and we are losing jobs and our population because we have so few people that are proficient in technology.

Chris Hickey thanked Congressman Peterson.
