LAST WEEK IN REVIEW

Visiting Rotarians: Jan Hill from the Pleasant Gap Rotary club
Make-ups turned in:
Guests:
All the Youth Exchange students and Kate Holmes, daughter of Rotarian Doug Holmes. Kate was an exchange studnet to Argentina a couple of years ago and her dad was one to Sweden back before electricity.
50/50: There are 29 cards left. The pot is probably about $600. Unfortunately, Ron Taverno who had his number called drew the wrong card.

Auction: Mark Whitfield donated a parking meter device from the borough that went for $24 to Roger Fetter. Thanks to both and to Marshall for being the auctioneer.

  • Jim Eberly won the award for selling the most coupon books-19, but over the weekend Carl Hill and Marshall Goldstein, it was learned, actually sold more at twenty apiece and received nothing. Jim rose to the occasion, as usual, to report the impropriety and misgiving of the tremendous honor bestowed upon him--the coveted and much maligned ribbon of huge salesman (or woman) ship.
  • Congratulations to Carl and Marshall for their great sales or coupons-twenty each!
  • The District Newsletter is online at the district Web site.

  • mystery answer: Judy Myrick. Her husband's distant cousin is a knight in Wales. When visiting Wales, Sir George Myrick served them coffee for tea time.
Previous Week's Speaker: Rotary Youth Exchange

This was one of those tear jerker meetings that I hate....

and love because we get a chance to really see the effect of what we do as Rotarians. We were introduced to several of the ten outbound students next year from Centre County (there are 22 from the district), and we listened to current inbound students Paul Beauregard from France and Myumi Doi from Japan speak to us about what the year has meant to each. With young people like this and the others involved in Rotary it won't be too long before we can stop all the senseless wars that keep popping up.

The Youth Exchange program and others from the Foundation like the GSE trip help us tear down walls that people put up artificially. These programs make us realize that folks in other countries are just like us. The link will connect you to the Rotary International Web site to learn more.

Paul told us what the year has meant to him; how he was apprehensive and how greatful he was to his host families, especially noting Ron and Patty Taverno who he is with right now. Ron and Patty have two daughters that were on exchange to South America a couple of years ago. Paul said he will always remember how he was happy to be here and be able to return home and tell the people of France what Americans are really like.

Myumi spoke of how she too was apprehensive but that her first home family, Teresa Davis, made her feel so much better. Carl Hill mentioned that there was a lot of bowing and smiling at first. Myumi is with Harry Zimbler's family now and she has become according to her own words, not shy any more, and not afraid. Myumi has proven to be quite an athelete too. She is third in the county in the javelin for the State College High School track team and recently won two dual meets. Danny McIntosh, an outbound student to Turkey next year, mentioned that Myumi can toss the javelin farther than him and he throws the javelin too.

All the students were grateful and gave special thanks to PDG Carl Hill who coordinates the RYEX program for the district. All had big tears too.

If I missed anything it is because there were alligator tears in my eyes and I couldn't see my note pad.--ed

Nice Work Rotarians!!!!!
