  • Meg brought in a great article from Fortune.com from 4/30/03 entitled “Rotary vs. Polio.” (click link to read it!)
  • A sign-up sheet was passed around for the 5/29/03 meeting which will be a vocation tour of MiniTab in State College. Leann Martin arranged the tour and spoke briefly about the company which employees about 160 people and specializes in statistical software.
  • Another sign-up sheet was distributed for the Olympic Village. We need to staff the Bocce Ball Court June 5th, 6th and 7th. We need at least 2 people per shift.
  • Also, Terry Edwards needs about 30 people to assist with Bowling at the Special Olympics.
  • Clean for Gene"at the Lederer Park: Gary Brytczuk, Chuck Gambone, Bonnie Abramson (kudos for bringing the donuts, OJ, and water), Meg & Clark Moose, Chris Hickey, Scott Rawson, Dick & Betsy Held, Terry Edwards, Kelly Kerner plus Bob & Connie Kerner plus Clark & Anastasia Kerner, Rose Kauffman, Chris Turley, Mark Meckstroth, Ranier Domalski, Ron Taverno, and Leanne & Jeff Martin.
  • Memorial Service ice cream helpers: Gary Brytczuk, James Dayananda, Hugh Mose, Carol Walsh, Jim Eberly, Meg & Clark Moose, Rose Kauffman, Jana King, Marshall Goldstein, Paul Rutter, Mark Meckstroth, and Brian Christian
  • We received a thank you letter from the Emporium Club for our $100 donation to them. Their meeting place burned down destroying all their records. Every club in the district donated to them.
  • Dave Filson was inducted as a new member by Paul Bell and Carol Walsh. Dave received his “red badge of courage.” He is a former member of the Lewistown club, but recently started working in State College. He wants to be heavily involved in our club. He’s a 3rd generation from a family farm in Lewistown and his background is in agriculture. He lives in Lewistown with his wife and 3 daughters. His wife is a school teacher and a 4H volunteer. His oldest daughter graduated from Mansfield University. He has another daughter starting at Penn State and his youngest attends Indian Valley High School.
  • The Rotaract club is now an official Penn State club. Thanks to Geoff and Todd for their work in that regard.
  • Discussions are still underway regarding the club's centennial project. Right now we are trying to do something in the parklet near Memorial Field with the evening club.
  • The club has a list serv. All active members are on it. The email address for it is SCDTROTARY-@LISTS.PSU.EDU. It only works if you are a subscriber so if you aren't on it and want to know even more about the club Email Paul Rutter to see about your admission. It is a private listserv not open to the public. If you are already on it and want help with it please call or email me.
  • We are also working on creating a charitable foundation. The details are being worked out now. Thanks to Rose and Roger for ironing out details.
Previous Week's Speaker: South Central Centre Co. Transportation Study

Secretary’s Report While attendance had been up to 77% in March, it fell to 66% for April.

Treasurer’s Report was distributed. Carl is moving this week so he was not present. Our Foundation should be up and running by July 1st. This will allow contributions to be tax deductible. Thanks to Roger and Rose for working on this project. Fund Raising Committee Report Hugh encouraged sign-ups for the East Coast Volleyball Food Booth for Memorial Day Weekend (May 24, 25 & 26). There are 33 slots that need to be filled so it’s important that all members participate who are able.

Membership Committee Report Carol Walsh asked all team leaders who were named at the beginning of the year to stand up. Then she asked all team leaders who brought in a new member since the beginning of the year to remain standing. Only two remained. Carol spoke of some type of “punishment” for those who did not bring in a new member by the end of the year, but it’s not sure what that punishment might be. Carol reminds everyone that a potential new member’s first visit is free! You can look like good giving them a free lunch! Prizes were also mentioned for the team who brings in the most new members. Mary Kay products??? We’re not quite sure… More details at a later date. The next new member orientation so we can lose our “red badges of courage” and step up to the blue badges will be held on Friday, June 6th at 7:30am at Perkins.

Twenty-two members attended the clean-up at Lederer Park on Saturday. Special thanks to Gary who had the dirtiest job of cleaning the grills and painting. Special thanks to the Kerner family with 5 helpers attending; led by Kelly Kerner!

Fourteen members were present on Sunday for the memorial. A cousin of Eugene’s said that Eugene would have been proud.

Centennial Community Project This is a joint project with the evening club. Of course, Rotary International celebrates its’ 100th anniversary in 2005. The joint committee of our club and the evening club has decided to make our project the Tot Lot in Central Parklet. Meg points out that currently the Tot Lot in the park is just a sand pit and concrete pillars. We have to raise about $25,000 and the project must be finished by Spring of 2005. There is no other park in the borough for small children to play which is why it was chosen. The area will be identified as the Rotary Tot Lot. A letter/proposal is ready to present to the borough on May 19th.

Finally, congratulations to Paul Rutter for receiving the Four Avenues of Service“Four Avenues for Service” Citation from the club. This citation is to reward an individual member for outstanding efforts. Meg chose Paul because he is involved in all club activities. In addition to his involvement in activities and fund raisers, when our web service basically closed up, Paul took charge and reconstructed the club website. He also maintains the website for the district. You can only receive this honor once in your Rotary life at which point Paul jokingly turned in his badge!!! Congratulations and thanks to Paul for his service to Downtown State College Rotary.
