  • Dick Jones put Foundation envelopes out.
  • Thanks to Todd Bacastow for alerting me to this WSJ editorial on Rotary and Polio eradication. It is from April 14, 2005.
  • There is a good article by Harry Zimbler in this month's State College Magazine. It is titled, "When the War Comes Home: A Personal View of the War in Iraq."
  • Paul Rutter mentioned the Italian GSE team will be in State College the nights of May 5-9, and 15th. Thanks to those who have said they might be able to host visitors. There is still an opportunity for more hosts. This is a great opportunity to particiapte in a huge part of Rotary and get to share your State College with your guest. Ask Paul Rutter for more information.
  • Rotary vanity license plates are available. There's a link on the District Web site to get them.
  • Jim Eberly - brick sales rising slowly, but the sales pyramid could use some work. He said wrap up by end of March. Jim said that buying a family tree might be considered. The first brick is $100 but each brick thereafter in the family is just $50. You can preserve your family legacy in a small remembrance of everyone alive now for future generations at the beautiful central Parklet!
  • Our Club is competing with the Evening Club to sell bricks. The winning club will be served lunch by the losing club at a future date. That's one more incentive to see bricks! We need to sell bricks. Sign your Brick Pledge today! We can meet our goal if everyone buys one and sells one. The District Newsletter for Febuary is available at the District Web site by clicking on the link to the current newsletter. http://www.district7350.org
  • The District Conference will take place from May 13-15. Registration forms are available from Carol or on the District website.
  • RYLA. The RYLA event will be held at Juniata College this ummer. Nominations for attendees are being taken now. LeAnne Martin is the contact person in our club. Students that are juniors in highschool now are eligible.
  • Jim Eberly reported about Rotary's Central Parklet Project sponsored by the two SC clubs. The new "Children's Play Space" will be lot of fun for kids. The total costs of the project are $50,000. 50% needs to be raised by the two SC clubs as part of Rotary's 100th anniversary in 2005. Bricks are on sale ($100 for first kid name, $50 for each subsequent). The bricks will be used for the walkway. A pamphlet was distributed. Please be selling bricks!
  • Hear the Public Service Announcement!!The club has a list serv. All active members are on it. The email address for it is SCDTROTARY-@LISTS.PSU.EDU. Email Paul Rutter to see about your admission. It is a private listserv not open to the public. If you are already on it and want help with it please call or email me.
  • There are two new Web pages up. One is for Rotary Foundation Program alumni. The hope or goal behind this page is to keep members aware of persons in our community that might benefit further from Rotary by membership or participation in other things we are doing. The second page is on the District Web site. It honors the Veterans in our Rotary community. Both pages are still in an initial building stage so if you know of anyone that has been left out, please let me know so I can include them.

Previous Week's Speaker: Classification Talks from B. Collins & B. Kashanna

    Barbara (Barbie) Collins

Barbara Collins' first experience with Rotary was at the 1985 RYLA conference at Westminster University. She was nominated to attend by the Kane Rotary and spent a wonderful week with other Western PA students learning more about leadership and community service.

She has lived in Centre County (Stormstown) for 9 years and currently works as a Development Associate for Easter Seals Central Pennsylvania, State College Office planning special events and cultivating donors. Barbie loves work in the non-profit sector because of the many hats one wears.

She is the current housing advisor to a sorority on campus and just helped with a $50K renovation to their suite. For her volunteer service to Zeta Tau Alpha, she was awarded a national honor ring for seven years of signifant volunteer service.

She had Gypsy the Wonder Dog for 9 years and recently lost her to bone cancer. Gypsy went to work with her and the children loved the dog. For those who were fearful, she calmed them and for those who were sad, she made them happy. She didn't judge. Barbie didn't like her home without a dog, so they added another Golden/Lab mix named Lucy. It is like adding chaos to chaos when having a puppy and a 2 and a half year old daughter. Anna, her Daughter, goes to preschool at Easter Seals and loves it. Prior to having a 2-year old, she played league volleyball, enjoyed reading and long weekend trips and well, time to herself.

    Bernadette Kashanna
Bernadette was raised in a small town in Lebanon. She is French educated and received a Bachelors degree in Business Administration from the University of Balamand in 2001. Then, in 2003, she earned an M.B.A. from the Lebanese American University.

Bernadette came to the U.S. two years ago and was married in 2003 to her college sweetheart whom she hadn't seen in two years!!! Her husband came here in 2001 to pursue his Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering. Now he is doing his Ph.D.

Bernadette volunteers at the International Hospitality Council, a non-profit organization supported by the United Way, Penn State's ISS, and members of the community. She's helping coordinate two programs; the Conversation Partners Program, and the Intercultural Women's Book Groups Program. She's been volunteering for a year now. She was nominated to receive the Rose Cologne "Volunteer of the Year" Award.

In her spare time, she loves biking, jogging, traveling, and listening to her husband's playing guitar.
