Highlights or changes to the coupon book this year include three Indian restaurants, Red's cheeseburgers and others. Team 2 is gonna come through and do well.
  • Roger Fetter & Jim Eberly announced the need to sell more bricks for the Central Parklet for the Children's Play Space. Our Club is competing with the Evening Club, and the winning club will be served lunch by the losing club at a future date. That's one more incentive to see bricks! We need to sell bricks. The total costs of the project are $50,000. 50% needs to be raised by the two SC clubs as part of Rotary's 100th anniversary in 2005. Bricks are on sale ($100 for first kid name, $50 for each subsequent). The bricks will be used for the walkway. A pamphlet was distributed. Please be selling bricks!
  • Paul Rutter announced that the State College & State College Downtown Rotary Club's will be hosting the GSE Team from Italy this spring from May 5th until May 10, and again on May 15 for their departure to Italy from the State College Airport on the 16th. We are looking for host families for the time period. One night or each night what ever you can help out with will be great. A lsit of activities is in the works and once we know more about the visiting team we will finalize things. Highlights though will be a trip to Niagara Falls for the day.
  • Hear the Public Service Announcement!!The club has a list serv. All active members are on it. The email address for it is SCDTROTARY-@LISTS.PSU.EDU. Email Paul Rutter to see about your admission. It is a private listserv not open to the public. If you are already on it and want help with it please call or email me.
  • There are two new Web pages up. One is for Rotary Foundation Program alumni. The hope or goal behind this page is to keep members aware of persons in our community that might benefit further from Rotary by membership or participation in other things we are doing. The second page is on the District Web site. It honors the Veterans in our Rotary community. Both pages are still in an initial building stage so if you know of anyone that has been left out, please let me know so I can include them.

Previous Week's Speaker: Tony Lopinski from State College Police

Tony spoke to us about identity theft. ID theft effects 10,000,000 persons in the United States each year. And it is rising! Tony suggests protecting your social security number and your drivers license number. He says we all need to minimize the numebr of cards we arry and also in the cards we do keep, he suggested asking the credit issuers to lower the limits. Also Tony recommends shreding docuemtns with personal information on them. there were a numebr of smalelr tips suchj as not placign externa;l mail in your mail box. To place these things in USPS drop boxes.

One of the other things Tony said to do was to get copies of your credit reports from Trans Union, Equifax, and Experian each year. The cost is minimal. One of the bankers in the club offered that the reports will be free later this year, once per year.
    Equifax: 800-685-1111; Experian: 888-397-3742; Trans Union: 800-916-8800

Punishment for ID theft is a misdemenor unless the victim is a senior then it becomes a felony 3.

In State College the number for the State College Police is 234-7150 for non emergencies.

As any banker in the club could attest, these instances of stolen credit cards and checks happen too many times each week. There are laws that will protect consumers but the laws take time for funds to be returned and in the mean times you will be without funds. Also often proof of innocence is on the consumer, as much as it would appear or seem like it shouldn't be that way.-ed.
