  • The District Conference this year is on May 1-4 in Hagerstown, Maryland. The rates for the hotel, events, and meals etc.are available at this link for downloading. I'd suggest checking out the Hagerstown club's Web site too in case they throw anything up on the Web in addition. I try to keep the District Web site up to date to with information as I receive it. Like Jim and Carol's version last year, Hagerstown is offering the chance to purchase individual event tickets.
  • Please try to think of innovative ways we can raise funds for polio plus this year. One club mentioned in the RI magazine sold bumper stickers with a slogan mentioning, thanks Rotary for erasing Polio. Let Linda know what you are thinking!
  • The district Training committee meeting scheduled for Feb 26 has changed venues, check the district Web site calendar for details
  • We grossed $6505 for the raffle tickets. We still have to pay for the cruise, & TV before knowing the net. We do know that the gross was much lower than hoped.
  • Mark, who won the big raffle, is taking the cruise vs the cash option. He and wife are leaving on February 14. Happy Sailing.
  • For those of you keeping up with email addresses, Pam Ferguson has a new one to use. She may be reached at pferguson@southhills.edu. If you have made changes or you aren't receiving the e-newsletter direct from me let me know.(yes I know this seems like a feeble request of e-mail on line but I do make printed versions of this!!)
  • Dr. D's GSE committee selected one person from three applicants for the GSe team to South Korea.
  • Marlene Davis, a banker with PNC, was approved by the board and club for membership.
  • The club has a list serv. All active members are on it. The email address for it is SCDTROTARY-@LISTS.PSU.EDU. It only works if you are a subscriber so if you aren't on it and want to know even more about the club email Paul Rutter to see about your admission. It is a private listserv not open to the public. If you are already on it and want help with it please call or email me.
  • Orders were taken last week for Rotary polo shirts ($14.95) and long sleeve denim shirts ($21.95). These will have the club logo similar to the shirts we had made about three years ago. Maryann Eberle is taking charge of this activity.
  • Marlene Davis, January 2003
    Don Bedell, December 2002
    Tom Murray, Oct 2002
    Scott Rawson, August 2002

A slate of nominees has been promulgated for offices and board memberships. They are Hugh Mose- President; Roger Fetter-1st VP; Teresa Davis-2nd VP; Chris Kerner-director 2nd year; Pat Coble-director 2nd year; Leanne Martin-director 1st year; Mark Whitfield-director 1st year; Maryann Eberle-secretary; Paul Rutter-assistant secretary; Carl Hill-treasurer; Ron Taverno-assistant treasurer; Meg Moose-past chairman.
  • About a month ago we lost the Club Web site when our Internet provider of server space went out of business. Through the kindness of a local Internet Service Provider (Centre of the Web) and my own business (Paul Rutter Web Design) the club Web site is back on the Internet. The new address is http://www.centreweb.com/rotary/club/ or http://www.sc-rotary.org. There are a few bugs to work out with files that are missing as a result of our old ISP going out of business without notice. I hope to have them back in place soon. Many thanks to Vicon for the three years of service we did get from them at no charge.
Previous Week's Speaker: Tour of the Creamery

We boarded a trolley near Beaver stadium and headed for the Borlund Lab and the University Creamery. Chuck missed the bus. We were led upstairs to a small conference room and fed lunch and had our brief meeting highlighted by Carol's question to Chuck and the floating candles auction item from Kelly.

The tour part was led by the creamery manager, Tom Palchak, We learned quite a few things. Among these in no particular order are that the University makes 250 million 8 oz cups of yogurt annually for the campus use. The creamery also makes 60 thousand pounds of cheddar cheese, 60 k of ricotta, and 50k of cream cheese along with 225 thousand gallons of icecream for sale only on the PSU campus. The creamery Web site for a virtual tour!!

The creamery only sells retail so the shops like the corner room that serve creamery products are having to come up to the creamery and buy at retail prices just like anyone else. The creamer gets requests for wholesales accounts but doesn't do any. The Creamery is self supporting.

In the USA the average consumer consumes 24 gallons of icecream per year. On the University Park campus, students eat 48 gallons. So we are not just a party school!

We learned safety too. Bacteria thrives in milk, next to blood the perfect carrier for bacteria. Milk in PA has a sell buy date which is 14 days after being processed. Tom said that PSU guaratees its milk for 7 days more if propoerly refrigerated and unopened. Once milk is opened it is best to consume it. If milk is left out more than 4 hours toss it away. The most favorite flavor is of course Peachy Paterno.

The creamery uses the best products, we saw the real coffee from Colombia used forthe WPSX coffee break ice cream, and vanilla from Madagascar used in producs that use vanilla.

The tour ended without samples.Unlesso fcourse you were sitting near Maryann and she was sharing. I was in the front of the bus and didn't witness any shared licks.

There is an awesome Web site with great pictures from the early creamery that is well worth checking out.
