Happy Bucks
from: Pam Ford for her return from a mission in Nicaragua
Dana was proud to announce that his 6 year old son who was seeded fourth
in a wrestling tournament blew through the competition defeatign the first
and third ranked seeds to win the tourney. Laurel was happy about
her daughter earning top ranking in downhill skiing. Ellie was
happy about the United Way surpassing its goal and earning $1,918,633.33.
Ellie named Russ Brooks, Evan Smith, and Hugh Mose for their support heading
various cabinet positions. Hugh offered money for being happy just to
be happy (so like Hugh!). Carl was happy about the United Way total
as well.
Harry Zimbler offered preliminary news about this years Spaghetti dinner
fund raiser.
Barbara Collins was inducted in to the club. Don Bedell was her sponsor.
Barbara is with Easter Seals Central Pennsylvania as an event specialist.
Ray P.'s membership application was approved by the membership comittee
and the board of directors. There is now a teen day waiting period. If
you have any concerns regarding Ray's membership please notify Roger or
Terry.
Dana Catalano and Linda Friedman introduced a
team sales board for the coupon books and requested that we keep selling
coupon books. The coupons really are a great value! Coupon
Books. Highlights or changes to the coupon book this year include
three Indian restaurants, Red's cheeseburgers and others. Team 2 is gonna
come through and do well.
Roger Fetter & Jim Eberly announced the need to sell more bricks
for the Central Parklet for the Children's Play Space. Our Club is competing
with the Evening Club, and the winning club will be served lunch by the
losing club at a future date. That's one more incentive to see bricks!
We need to sell bricks. Sign your
Brick Pledge today! We
can meet our goal if everyone buys one and sells one.
The District Newsletter for January is available at the District
Web site by clicking on the link to the current
newsletter. http://www.district7350.org
The District Conference will take place from May
13-15. Registration forms are available from Carol or on the District
website.
RYLA. The RYLA event will be held at Juniata
College this ummer. Nominations for attendees are being taken now. LeAnne
Martin is the contact person in our club. Students that are juniors
in highschool now are eligible.
Jim Eberly reported about Rotary's Central
Parklet Project sponsored by the two SC clubs. The new "Children's
Play Space" will be lot of fun for kids. The total costs of the project
are $50,000. 50% needs to be raised by the two SC clubs as part of Rotary's
100th anniversary in 2005. Bricks are on
sale ($100 for first kid name, $50 for each subsequent). The bricks
will be used for the walkway. A pamphlet
was distributed. Please be selling bricks!
Paul Rutter announced that the State College & State College Downtown
Rotary Club's will be hosting the GSE
Team from Italy this spring from May 5th until May 10, and again on
May 15 for their departure to Italy from the State College Airport on
the 16th. We are looking for host families for the time period. One night
or each night what ever you can help out with will be great. A lsit of
activities is in the works and once we know more about the visiting team
we will finalize things. Highlights though will be a trip to Niagara Falls
for the day.
The
club has a list serv. All active members
are on it. The email address for it is SCDTROTARY-@LISTS.PSU.EDU. Email Paul Rutter to see about your admission.
It is a private listserv not open to the
public. If you are already on it and want help with it please call or
email me.
There are two new Web pages up. One is for Rotary
Foundation Program alumni. The hope or goal behind
this page is to keep members aware of persons in our community that might
benefit further from Rotary by membership or participation in other things
we are doing. The second page is on the District Web site. It honors the
Veterans in our Rotary community. Both pages are still in an initial
building stage so if you know of anyone that has been left out, please
let me know so I can include them.

Week's Speaker: Dave Lindstrom, PSU Chief Privacy Officer |
Dave Lindstrom, the head of security and athe chief privacy officer
for the University was our speaker.
Dave noted all types of new privacy acts, but the main one he talked
to us about was HIPAA. The health portability act that some of us may
be familar with regarding medical records and other matters. Dave showed
us a startling ad on the ACLU Web site for what could happen if one
calls for Pizza. The URL is http://www.aclu.org/pizza.
This link has a cool movie regarding what may already possible should
someone choose to know it sicne data can be linked.
Dave let us know the European Union is much more restrictive than the
United States regarding privacy.
He encouraged us not to share information with anyone we do not know
and to be aware of phishing. A number that we might want to call for
reducing junk credit card offers by mail is 888-5OPTOUT.
Russ Brooks presented Dave witha club coffee mug.
