  • We grossed $6505 for the raffle tickets. We still have to pay for the cruise, TV before knowing the net. We do know that the gross was much lower than hoped.
  • One of the bigger items we recently discussed was regarding the cruise rafffle and the less than optimal results of the raffle. Some but not all points brought to light include:

    • Mining our own money
    • Variety of capabilities of our diverse membership regarding time and money
    • Ticket price too high
    • Raise money first before making pledges
    • Learning experience
    • Number of tickets each member had to sell was too high
    • Weak decision making by the board
    • Increase dues
    • What happened to the coupon book, easy money vs giving club bad name?
    • Decision to stop the coupon book not made known to club in a significant manner
  • The meeting for January 30th looks like a fun one. Roger has arranged a tour of the creamery. We'll park cars by the stadium and take a bus up to the creamery. There is a signup sheet for the tour since lunch will be provided.
  • On January 25, the Rotary Foundation presents the Highschool GridIron classic with Florida highschool stars playing host to the rest of the country! The game will be televised on ESPN at 2 PM.
  • Marlene Davis, a banker with PNC, was approved by the board for membership. Her application goes to the membership for three more days now.
  • Board meeting February 4th regular place at 8:00 a.m. (Autoport on S. Atherton)
  • The International Convention is in Brisbane Australia May 29- June 1, 2003
  • The club has a list serv. All active members are on it. The email address for it is SCDTROTARY-@LISTS.PSU.EDU. It only works if you are a subscriber so if you aren't on it and want to know even more about the club email Paul Rutter to see about your admission. It is a private listserv not open to the public. If you are already on it and want help with it please call or email me.

    Don Bedell December 2002
    Tom Murray Oct 2002
    Scott Rawson August 2002

  • We are placing orders for Rotary polo shirts ($14.95) and long sleeve denim shirts ($21.95). These will have the club logo similar to the shirts we had made about three years ago. Maryann Eberle is taking charge of this activity. Sign up sheets are going around.
  • A slate of nominees has been promulgated for offices and board memberships. They are Hugh Mose- President; Roger Fetter-1st VP; Teresa Davis-2nd VP; Chris Kerner-director 2nd year; Pat Coble-director 2nd year; Leanne Martin-director 1st year; Mark Whitfield-director 1st year; Maryann Eberle-secretary; Paul Rutter-assistant secretary; Carl Hill-treasurer; Ron Taverno-assistant treasurer; Meg Moose-past chairman.
  • The club earned about $1200 from the Festival of the Trees
  • Pam Ferguson was granted a leave of absense for the quarter since she is teaching during our meeting time.
  • Linda Friedman is taking over the polio eradication campaign.
  • A month ago we lost the Club Web site when our Internet provider of server space went out of business. Through the kindness of a local Internet Service Provider (Centre of the Web) and my own business (Paul Rutter Web Design) the club Web site is back on the Internet. The new address is http://www.centreweb.com/rotary/club/ or http://www.sc-rotary.org. There are a few bugs to work out with files that are missing as a result of our old ISP going out of business without notice. I hope to have them back in place soon. Many thanks to Vicon for the three years of service we did get from them at no charge.
Previous Week's Speaker: Linda Friedman on Polio Plus and her classification talk

Linda spoke on two topics today.

The first was her Classification Talk. Linda is from Secaucus, NJ. She attended Rutgers University and then taught school. She married Jerry and then had her daughter Rebecca. She raised Egyptian foster child for a year. Living in New Jersey, Linda developed a business as an interior designer. Several years ago she closed the business and moved to State College. Since then she has attended clown school and has started a new business speaking to groups.

Linda's second topic was PolioPlus. PolioPlus started in 1979 with a project in the Philippines. In 1988 Rotary International raised 247 million dollars US and established a goal of eradicating polio worldwide by 2005. The process for doing this included National Immunization Days (NIDs) in each country.

Linda and her husband Jerry participated in the NID in Madagascar. Madagascar, an island nation off the east coast of Africa, is one of third world conditions with an extremely poor (but very friendly) population. They have terrible air and water pollution, and also a very high crime in the cities.

In addition to the vaccine itself, PolioPlus has spent a lot of money on publicity to get kids to events. NID's are a really big deal politically. Also PolioPlus gives kids vitamins in addition to the Sabin vaccine. There are ten countries left in South Asia and Africa where polio has not yet been conquered. Rotary International needs to raise an additional 80 million dollars US to completely eradicate Polio worldwide.
