  • We need to sell bricks. Sign your Brick Pledge today! Maybe it would be a good idea to take care of this for tax year 2004. All contributions go through the new Club foundation-a 501(c)3 organization that was established last year.Only 15 members have purchased bricks so far. We can meet our goal if everyone buys one and sells one.
  • Please do your make-ups. One can use the E-club if needed. We need to get our attendance numbers higher.we were at 65% in December.
  • RYLA. The RYLA event will be held at Juniata College this ummer. Nominations for attendees are being taken now. LeAnne Martin is the contact person in our club. Students that are juniors in highschool now are eligible.
  • The Clare Fund will be having a fund raiser on February 4 at Toftrees withan art show and auction. Tickets are $20 each and are available from Jana King/King Printing
  • There will be an event for the Clearwater Conservancy on January 21 called For the Love of Chocolate. Tickets are $25 each and are available from Ellie Beaver.
  • The ten day period is still out on proposed member Barbara C.If you have any adverse thoughts regarding this proposed member, please contact Terry or Roger soon.
  • Jim Eberly reported about Rotary's Central Parklet Project sponsored by the two SC clubs. The new "Children's Play Space" will be lot of fun for kids. The total costs of the project are $50,000. 50% needs to be raised by the two SC clubs as part of Rotary's 100th anniversary in 2005. Bricks are on sale ($100 for first kid name, $50 for each subsequent). The bricks will be used for the walkway. A pamphlet was distributed. Please be selling bricks!
  • The club has a list serv. All active members are on it. The email address for it is SCDTROTARY-@LISTS.PSU.EDU. Email Paul Rutter to see about your admission. It is a private listserv not open to the public. If you are already on it and want help with it please call or email me.
  • There are two new Web pages up. One is for Rotary Foundation Program alumni. The hope or goal behind this page is to keep members aware of persons in our community that might benefit further from Rotary by membership or participation in other things we are doing. The second page is on the District Web site. It honors the Veterans in our Rotary community. Both pages are still in an initial building stage so if you know of anyone that has been left out, please let me know so I can include them.

Previous Week's Speaker: Gary Langsdale, Risk Manager for Penn State

Our speaker was Gary Langsdale. Gary is a manager of risk for the University. Gary let us know he was happy for the free lunch and that in a former life he was a risk manager for International Paper. He opened his talk by citing humorously, the differences between working in academia and a for-profit company. He said in academics a number of committees are established to determine if a directive from the President is to be considered. In the for profit sector, if the President says to jump, everyone does it.

The management of risk is learning how to deal with a problem before it becomes a problem. In other words, it is solving a problem before it becomes a problem. A main goal is identifying what can go wrong, quantifying, and determining the probability of an event occurring.

Penn State does a lot of risk reduction by transferrign risk, mainly via hold harmless agreements. The enterprise risk management system is used. Risk Management works with all groups.

Gary closed the talk by asking as a risk determiner, would you let your family member do yada yada yada?
